Great Concept and Execution - Arlington PD

Three years ago, Synergy Light developed the 360, a high tech Tactical Throw Light which can effectively illuminate a whole room without the user needing to hold it thus, making themselves a target.

This device projects light in a 360-degree pattern to evenly light up hundreds of square feet. It features cutting-edge sensors and electronics that determine its orientation to ensure 1,000 lumens are projected in a useful direction and battery power is not wasted. Built tough from polymer materials to withstand abuse from even its roughest users, this expandable device allows for optional secondary light sources such as IR or color LED’s. Each unit is preprogrammed with five applications the user can change in the field and custom programming is available. The device features an “auto-arm” system upon being removed from its pouch to avoid having to be manually turned on in a low light high stress environment. Just, remove it from its pouch and deploy it and the unit will takes care of the rest.

Recently, Synergy received positive feedback from members of the Arlington, TX Police Department, calling the 360 Tactical Throw Light’s applications a “great concept and execution.” To help others understand the 360 Tactical Throw Light’s value and performance in a “real world” scenario, the Arlington Police Department was able to share their experience with the 360:

The 360 Tactical Throw Light is a rugged tactical throw light with multiple modes. It has a white light flood with auto-orientation, strobe, and windshield application, which is a great concept and execution. Its a square 3.5”x3.5”x1” cube and has rubber bumpers on the corners for protection and to grip windshields during the windshield application. It is powered by (4) CR123A batteries, which are inserted by removing four hex screws on the corners of the item. The different modes are cycled by utilizing the (2) buttons in the center on one side of the light. The light comes with a “self-activating” MOLLE pouch with built in magnet for the “on/off” function of the light and Velcro closure. The pouch can also be belt mounted, if MOLLE options are not available, e.g. Patrol Officer’s belt.

The 360’s initial impression is positive, and leaves them impressed by it’s advertised applications and functionality. But how did it perform in a “real-world” setting? Will it stand up to the abuse that will come from high stress environment?” They go on to describe its performance in actual field settings:

The light is throwing out 1000 lumens in all directions. Each side of the cube has LEDs, so no matter what side ends facing the direction you’re looking to throw light, it will work as desired. Even if the light ends up with the shorter side facing down, the cube still orients to activate the correct LEDs. THIS IS BENEFICIAL, as most rooms where this could be thrown in real life applications and not a shoot house, may have some type of furniture or obstruction which may stop the light from laying perfectly flat. Even at a 45-degree angle, the light auto-orients.

light orangeThe amount of light this cube throws out in all directions is great for area denial. Thrown through a window on a barricaded person it can light up the room enough that any movement within will cast shadows and show silhouettes to perimeter units. It also throws a nice “wall of light” to cover friendly movements within structures as well. The size of the light is beneficial in that it is more maneuverable than current lights our team has been using which are bigger boxy lights with shoulder straps and moveable LED heads. (Similar to photo shown)

The main application of the white light only version to us was the “Windshield Mode.” This again, uses auto-orientation, however, it orients the light downward. Our main job function is on our department’s street crimes unit. A large portion of our job deals with traffic stops and working around and in vehicles largely at night. Whether dealing with a subject with an aggravated felony warrant or drug interdiction, having 1,000 lumens flood the passenger compartment hands free is of great benefit. Walk up to the vehicle, throw the light on the windshield with the support hand, and seconds later the auto-on function illuminates the front seats, and allows us to move freely to gain more advantageous positioning or use a handheld light in other areas while maintaining illuminated visual on the front two passengers. Additionally, when it’s time to remove subjects from the vehicle, in most situations we don’t have to maintain my handheld beam on the subjects and then figure out what to do with our light when we go hands on for a frisk or a fight. We can holster our handheld light and have 2 hands free to gain control. Also, for narcotics interdiction stops; Once the individuals are removed, we can take a step back from the vehicle and have the majority of the viewable space illuminated, as it is during the day, to see what looks different or out of place without focusing our vision on a smaller beam and missing peripheries.

To summarize, the Synergy 360 Tactical Throw Light stands up to the demands of a real-world scenario, and is a dependable solution for departments that prioritize the safety of their officers. The 360 is a valuable asset that provides a lightweight, rugged, and compact way to illuminate rooms or hallways, adding visual certainty or area denial for the officer within a structure. The windshield mode easily illuminates the passenger compartment of the vehicle. This gives the officer the advantage of having a hands-free and stationary light that allows for distance management, freedom of movement, and ultimately a safer response to a threat within the vehicle.
